SAP Global Trade Services

SAP Global Trade Services (SAP GTS) automates trade compliance and customs: sanctioned party screening, embargo and licence controls, import and export customs declarations, preferential origin determination and duty relief — checked inside the transaction rather than after it.

Trade compliance is the one supply chain domain where being fast and wrong is worse than being slow. A blocked party screened after the shipment left, a licence assumed rather than checked, an origin claim nobody can evidence three years later — these are not process inefficiencies, they are exposures.

GTS moves those checks to where the transaction happens. We implement compliance, customs and risk management, and — as importantly — design the exception handling, because a screening hit that nobody is accountable for clearing simply becomes a queue.

Capability

What we do in SAP GTS.

01

Compliance Management

Sanctioned party list screening against maintained watchlists, embargo checks by country and business partner, and legal control — licence determination, licence assignment and export classification with proper audit trail.

02

Customs Management

Import and export declaration processing, national filing integration, customs and bonded warehouse procedures, inward and outward processing relief, and transit handling.

03

Risk Management

Preferential origin determination and vendor declaration solicitation, restitution, and letter-of-credit handling tied to the underlying sales and delivery documents.

04

Classification

Commodity code and export control classification number assignment, reclassification workflows, and content-provider integration so classifications stay current instead of ageing quietly.

05

Exception handling design

Blocked document workflows, escalation paths and role design. The configuration is the easy half; deciding who releases a hit, on what evidence, and inside what SLA is what makes the control real.

06

Integration

Plug-ins to ERP sales, purchasing, delivery and billing documents, plus TM and EWM touchpoints so compliance checks sit on the actual movement, not a copy of it.

Decisions

The choices worth getting right early.

These are the architectural decisions that are expensive to revisit. We would rather argue about them in week two than in year two.

GTS, edition for SAP HANA

The current generation of the product. New implementations should start here; existing GTS landscapes need a planned upgrade path rather than a drift.

Phased by risk, not by module

We normally sequence compliance first (screening and embargo carry the sharpest exposure and the fastest payback), then customs, then preference — rather than attempting a single all-modules go-live.

Country-by-country customs rollout

Customs filing is national. Each country brings its own authority, message formats and broker relationships, so rollout is planned as a repeatable country template plus a local delta, not as one global switch.

SAP GTS questions

Straight answers.

Including the ones where the honest answer is "it depends" — with the actual dependency named.

What does SAP GTS actually do?

SAP GTS performs trade compliance and customs functions against SAP transactions: it screens business partners against sanctioned party lists, applies embargo and export licence controls, blocks non-compliant documents before they progress, produces import and export customs declarations, and determines preferential origin for duty relief. It sits alongside ERP and checks sales, purchasing, delivery and billing documents as they are created.

Do we need SAP GTS if our freight forwarder handles customs?

A forwarder files on your behalf, but the legal responsibility for the declared data — classification, valuation, origin, licence eligibility — generally stays with you as importer or exporter of record. GTS is about being able to produce and evidence that data from your own system. Organisations with low volumes and simple flows often reasonably stay with a broker-led process; the case for GTS strengthens with volume, product complexity, controlled goods, and preference claims.

Is SAP GTS being replaced by SAP Global Trade Services, edition for SAP HANA?

The edition for SAP HANA is the current generation of the same product line, not a different product. New implementations should be planned on it directly, and existing classic GTS landscapes need a deliberate upgrade plan aligned to their maintenance horizon.

How do we handle screening false positives?

False positives are managed, not eliminated. The levers are match-strategy tuning, good business partner data, and a maintained whitelist of cleared parties. Just as important is the operating model: a named team, a defined release authority and an SLA. Without those, tuning simply moves an unmanaged queue somewhere else.
